The History of The Garrison
Fabulous Scottish Hotels purchased the building in late 2015, the extensive renovation work started in early 2017 to bring the building into the quirky modern hotel you see today.
We opened on the 18th of July 2018.
The Garrison Hotel building was opened as a police station in the late 1950s and closed in February 2014. Prior to the current building, there was a much smaller police station on the site dating back to the late 1800s when the court house was built.
The former police station had the 6 cell rooms we use today as bunk rooms, number 8 and 9 were the female block and 10-13 were male. We have retained the original security gates and 2 of the original prison cell doors where the look hatch still works, our management office was the charge bar for new arrests. Showers 8-9 were used for holding/strip search.
The reception and bar were the police reception and control room where the town’s CCTV was also monitored. Rooms 1-7 were CID office interview rooms, a breathalyser room, a fingerprint room and a medical room.
At the back of the hotel where our new suite rooms have been built were police garages where they stored police vehicles and the local mountain rescue equipment was stored and upon an emergency call the mountain rescue volunteers would prepare to assist in the rescue on the local mountains. Upstairs was police accommodation.
